For those living outside of their home country for extended periods of time, there is a need for worldwide comprehensive medical coverage. In order to accommodate the need there are plans available that offer worldwide coverage, including the USA. These plans allow for those who travel back to the USA for ministry or family trips to have coverage regardless of where they are in the world. There are plans available that manage cost by excluding coverage in certain countries. These plans financially incentivize the members to seek medical treatment in regions where care is excellent but cost is more contained. There are plans available for multiple needs. They are divided into three types of classifications:
Individual or Family
Plans designed to meet the needs of individuals or families have individualized underwriting and are designed to be personalized based on the level of coverage desired and the cost based on age banding. These plans are available for anyone living outside of their home country seeking a comprehensive medical plan.
Group
Plans that address the needs of groups are not individually underwritten but are underwritten based on the initial group census provided to the carrier. Plan benefits are chosen by a plan administrator and apply to all of the members of the group equally. The strength of these plans lies in the lack of individual underwriting and the ease of administration. Premiums tend to increase annually at the renewal dates for these plans. These rate increases are based on two key factors.
Industry trend lines are determined by evaluating the industry as a whole and the impact of regulatory changes and claims that affect the expenses incurred by all carriers. The group performance is a measure of how this individual group compared to the industry as a whole with respect to claims history. If the group performance is above the average trend line of the industry, the group typically sees an annual rate increase. If the group’s claims history is below the trend line, the rate increase is usually minimal or waived.
Non-U.S. Citizens
As more churches and ministries based outside of the U.S. have sent missionaries outside of their home country, there arose a need for a unique type of coverage. Because most of these countries do not have an insurance based system for covering medical expenses, the typical U.S. based worldwide coverage plans are too expensive. There is a significant need for catastrophic coverage for these missionaries. They are used to receiving care locally for routine medical needs; however, in the case of a major medical need the resources are not available and the sending ministries cannot always cover the expenses. There are both individual and family plans available as well as group plans for these missionaries and mission sending organizations.
Many large sending organizations can customize plan design to meet the unique needs of their travelers. We serve as a negotiating partner with the ministry to secure the benefits and deductibles desired to accommodate the budget needs of the ministry. Items such as Adventure Sports Riders and Trip Cancellation benefits as well as enhanced levels of benefits can be addressed through customized plan designs.
